JOB TITLE: Communications Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Native Law Centre

STATUS: 1.0 FTE; Term, ten months, with the possibility of extension.

COMPETITION NO.: 12264-M

SALARY INFORMATION: The salary range is $44,873 to $70,115 per annum (Specialist/Professional, Phase 1). The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To develop and implement communications strategies for the Program of Legal Studies for Native People (PLSNP), particularly for student recruitment. Prepare materials to promote the PLSNP locally and nationally including the media, government, industry and the general public.

NATURE OF WORK: Reporting to the Director, Program of Legal Studies for Native People, the Communications Coordinator requires a high level of creativity, analytical thinking and conceptualization to develop effective communications materials and plans for the PLSNP.

The PLSNP is an outstanding law program which creates opportunities for Aboriginal people to study law. Since the late 1970s, PLSNP graduates have been instrumental in transforming the legal system nationally and internationally. Each year the PLSNP welcomes Aboriginal students from across Canada who will be attending law schools across the country. Its property curriculum is recognized as the equivalent of a first year law class by most Canadian law schools. The PLSNP prepares students for success in law school by teaching through the Property curriculum the skills needed to succeed in law school. The PLSNP requires a communication officer to publicize the PLSNP, its mission and the benefits and opportunities it creates.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

? Ensure key PLSNP messages are effectively communicated to local and national audiences via developing appropriate website, print materials and effective placement of advertising.

? Understand the PLSNP?s priorities and create communications materials that benefit the PLSNP.

? Develop website with appropriate functions including ability to easily monitor and update materials; develop attractive print materials including posters, brochures, print ads and editorial copy.

? Negotiate with on- and off-campus contacts to develop and promote PLSNP including research of appropriate and effective advertising venues for student recruitment.

? Identify strategic promotional opportunities and assist with developing tactics and plans for optimizing these opportunities. Ensure appropriate timing of communications with regard to phases in the PLSNP/law admission cycle.

? Build collaborative relationships and partnerships locally and nationally.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: An undergraduate degree in communications, public relations and/or journalism.

Experience: Two to five years of directly-related experience in communications design, planning, editing and writing.

Skills: Superior communication skills both verbal and written; demonstrated experience in developing and evaluating communication materials, policies and procedures; effective organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to take initiative and work collaboratively; excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written; demonstrated ability to balance a demanding workload, multitask and adjust to changing priorities; creativity and a good sense of design with a keen attention to detail; and proficiency with web-based applications, word processing and desktop publishing, spreadsheets and databases. Photography skills would be an asset.
