(AP) ? Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, on her first foreign trip in nearly a quarter-century, offered encouragement Wednesday to impoverished migrants whose flight from their homeland is emblematic of the devastation wrought there by decades of misrule.

"Don't feel down, or weak. History is always changing," she told an exuberant crowd of thousands southwest of Bangkok. Many held signs saying, "We want to go home," and Suu Kyi said her visit was aimed at learning how she could help them.

"Today, I will make you one promise: I will try my best for you," she said.

In the town of Mahachai, home to Thailand's largest population of Burmese migrants, thousands of Myanmar's downtrodden crowded around her and chanted: "Long Live Mother Suu!"

"I had only seen her on TV and in newspapers," said Saw Hla Tun, who left Myanmar's Karen state seven years ago and earns a meager wage carrying heavy salt sacks on his back. "I couldn't hold back my tears when I saw her."

After speaking to the crowd, Suu Kyi met with migrant workers who told her they are mistreated by employers but don't know their rights and have no legal means to settle disputes.

Suu Kyi arrived in Thailand on Tuesday night on a trip that shows just how much life has changed in her homeland. The Nobel Peace Prize winner lived 15 of the last 24 years under house arrest and dared not leave during the intermittent periods of freedom because she feared the then-ruling military junta would not allow her to return. Now an elected member of Parliament, she will speak later this week at the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

She'll return to Myanmar briefly before heading to Europe for a five-country tour in mid-June. Her stops include England, where she'll address the British Parliament, and Oslo, Norway, to formally accept the Nobel she won 21 years ago.

Fixing a battered economy is one of the most crucial challenges facing Myanmar as it begins opening up in the wake of 49 years of military governance that ended only last year.

Thailand hosts around 2.5 million impoverished Burmese who have fled here to work low-skilled jobs as domestic servants or in manual labor industries like fisheries and the garment sector.

Andy Hall, a migrant expert and researcher at the Institute for Population and Social Research at Thailand's Mahidol University, said the Myanmar migrants ? up to a million of them lacking work permits ? make up between 5 and 10 percent of the Thai work force, contributing as much as 7 percent of the nation's GDP.

Many are exploited and paid reduced wages. Some have been trafficked; some have had their passports confiscated by employers. Hall said they were nevertheless "the lifeblood of a lot of the Myanmar economy, sending home money to support families who don't have enough money to eat."

"They have no voice, they can never speak up or stand up," Hall said. "So for Aung San Suu Kyi to visit is like a dream come true, someone who finally may be able to bring attention to their suffering."

One of the migrants, a 26-year-old woman named Khin Than Nu, works at a Thai canning factory and dreams of her home in Myanmar's Mon state.

"We left our parents in Burma, and all my brothers and sisters work here to support our parents," she said. "I hope Daw Suu will help develop our country, and bring jobs so we can go home."

Orkut has announced that users of Google's other social network can now use both from a unified profile. Those who plump for the change will find their details merged (using your Google+ credentials) and will now be subject to the same privacy and sharing settings. While popular in Brazil and India, Orkut hasn't been a high priority project for Mountain View for a long time, so it's easy to see this as a move to push big swathes of people to make a move onto the company's newest favorite son.

South Dakota man dies after fighting in an unregulated MMA bout

Dustin Jenson, a 26-year-old man from Sturgis, S.D., died a week after participating in an unregulated MMA bout.

After losing by submission at RingWars on May 18, Jenson watched two fights, went back to the locker room and had a seizure. Medical officials determined he had increased pressure on his brain, so they treated it with a medically induced coma and surgery. He was taken off life support and his organs were donated on May 24.

It was Jenson's fifth fight, and both doctors, and his family and friends found nothing out of the ordinary in the bout.

"Doctors have watched the video and said it shouldn't have happened," Schieman [Jenson's mother-in-law] said. "They said the fight may have triggered a brain aneurysm, but it was not overly violent."

MMA is not regulated in South Dakota. In states where MMA is regulated, brain scans are part of the pre-fight medical exams that all fighters are required to undergo. Thiago Alves was pulled from a bout in New Jersey at UFC 111 when his pre-fight medicals found an irregularity. Santino DeFranco, who was on the ninth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," was slated to be on the second season of the show. His pre-fight medicals found two brain aneurysms.

Jenson is survived by his wife and daughter. Click here to donate to them.

Justin Bieber? to Face Criminal Charges for Alleged Photographer Battery?

Gonna focus on the important stuff. the music.

So Justin Bieber Tweeted yesterday, following news breaking that the singer has been accused of battery by a paparazzi member who claims Bieber sent him to the hospital via a physical parking lot altercation outside a mall on Sunday.

Unfortunately for Justin, however, authorities aren't ready to alter their focus just yet.

Mike Tyson and Justin Bieber

This isn't the ideal time for a photo of Justin Bieber and Mike Tyson to hit the Internet.

Sources confirm to TMZ that the alleged incident will, indeed, be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney for possible criminal prosecution.

Police have requested an interview with Bieber, who is currently in Norway, and the investigation is not yet complete. It's also not unusual for cops to refer any high-profile case to prosecutors.

If somehow convicted, Bieber could face six months in prison. For now, though, let's focus on the music, as Justin has requested, shall we?

Bronx Vet Accused Of Promising To Have Pets - CBS New York

Dr. Andrew Manesis (credit: CBS 2)

Dr. Andrew Manesis (credit: CBS 2)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? A Bronx veterinarian is facing disturbing accusations of dumping dozens of animal carcasses along a highway.

WCBS 880?s Sean Adams On The Story

Dr. Andrew Manesis, a vet whose practice is in Throggs Neck, left his office in a hurry on Tuesday, running from allegations about dumping 26 cats, eight dogs and a lizard near the Hutchinson River Parkway in April, CBS 2?s Pablo Guzman reported.

?[We're] grossly defending these allegations. We have a counsel for the hospital and I wish that this would be resolved. This is a disdainful situation,? Manesis said.

Menesis is accused of taking people?s money to have their pets cremated and allegedly keeping the money while dumping the animals along the road.

Anthony LoBosco, a former client of the vet, said Dr. Manesis told him his cat had a virus that would go away. Instead, another vet discovered something far more serious.

?They just felt it for a second. The cat had a softball-size tumor in his stomach. They had to put the cat to sleep immediately,? LoBosco said.

The investigation was carried out by the Westchester SPCA and Westchester County Police.

?It was very, very disturbing ? reason being people place a lot of trust and faith in the vets. What he did was he betrayed that trust of his clients,? said Ernest Lungaro of the Westchester SPCA.

Westchester police tracked down the owner of a discarded cat from a shoebox the animal was in.

?The serial number from that shoebox was subpoenaed and the business records revealed the owner of the cat. That owner brought us to the veterinary office in the Bronx,? Sgt. Edward Reich said.

Dr. Menesis is not only facing a possible year in jail, but the loss of his license.

New prostate cancer tests ? Profncampbell's Blog

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in a man?s prostate. It is one of the most frequent forms of cancer affecting men. About one in every six men will be diagnosed with this disease sometime during the course of his life. (SOURCE: www.mayoclinic.com)

PREVENTION: Here are a few ways men can lower their risk of prostate cancer:
? Eat fewer calories or exercise more so that you maintain a healthy weight.
? Try to keep the amount of fat you get from red meat and dairy products to a minimum.
? Watch your calcium intake. Do not take supplemental doses far above the recommended daily allowance. Some calcium is OK, but avoid taking more than 1,500 mg of calcium a day.
? Eat more fish ? evidence from several studies suggest that fish can help protect against prostate cancer because they have ?good fat? particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid trans fatty acids (found in margarine).
? Try to incorporate cooked tomatoes that are cooked with olive oil, which has also been shown to be beneficial, and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) into many of your weekly meals. Soy and green tea are also potential dietary components that may be helpful. (Source: www.pcf.org)

GOING PRO! PSA testing is one step in early identification of prostate tumors, but PSA testing can miss some cancers, or produce a false positive. A study published in the Journal of Urology, followed 900 patients from 10 sites. The results showed the new screening test, a simple blood test called the Pro-PSA test, is particularly useful for patients with a normal prostate exam whose PSA is 2 to 10, a range considered the diagnostic gray zone.

The Pro-PSA test measures a more specific PSA subform called (-2) Pro-PSA. The test becomes even more accurate when its results are analyzed with a mathematical formula that provides an overall Prostate Health Index. The formula divides the Pro-PSA number by the free-PSA, then multiplies the quotient of the two by the square root of the total PSA. (Source: Journal of Urology)

NEW TESTING! The urine test looks for a genetic change that occurs in some prostate cancers, and its results could be used to separate men into high-, intermediate- and low-risk groups. The new urine test could be given after a man has been found high PSA levels to guide the decision about whether a biopsy should be done. The test is based on work published in a 2005 study by the same researchers that identified a genetic change present in 50 percent of prostate cancers that were identified by a PSA screening test.

By combining the new urine test with a test for prostate specific antigen 3, the researchers could tell if a man has prostate cancer better than they can with only a PSA test, the study said. The researchers screened more than 1,000 men with the new test and based on the results, separated them into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups. Subsequent biopsies resulted in a cancer diagnosis in 21 percent, 43 percent and 69 percent of men in these groups, respectively. (Source: MSNBC) MORE

CHAMPAIGN, lll. Doctors can now get a peek behind the eardrum to better diagnose and treat chronic ear infections, thanks to a new medical imaging device invented by University of Illinois researchers. The device could usher in a new suite of non-invasive, 3-D diagnostic imaging tools for primary-care physicians.

The research team, led by University of Illinois electrical and computer engineering professor Stephen Boppart, will publish their advance in the online Early Edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of May 28.

Ear infections are the most common conditions that pediatricians treat. Chronic ear infections can damage hearing and often require surgery to place drainage tubes in the eardrum, and problems can persist into adulthood.

Studies have found that patients who suffer from chronic ear infections may have a film of bacteria or other microorganisms that builds up behind the eardrum, very similar to dental plaque on unbrushed teeth. Finding and monitoring these so-called biofilms are important for successfully identifying and treating chronic ear infections.

"We know that antibiotics don't always work well if you have a biofilm, because the bacteria protect themselves and become resistant," Boppart said. "In the presence of a chronic ear infection that has a biofilm, the bacteria may not respond to the usual antibiotics, and you need to stop them. But without being able to detect the biofilm, we have no idea whether or not it's responding to treatment."

However, middle-ear biofilms are difficult to diagnose. A doctor looking through a standard otoscope sees only the eardrum's surface, not the bacteria-seeded biofilm lurking behind it

waiting to bloom into infection. Invasive tests can provide evidence of a biofilm, but are unpleasant for the patient and cannot be used routinely.

The new device is an application of a technique called optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging system devised by Boppart's group. It uses beams of light to collect high-resolution, three-dimensional tissue images, scanning through the eardrum to the biofilm behind it much like ultrasound imaging, but using light.

"We send the light into the ear canal, and it scatters and reflects from the tympanic membrane and the biofilm behind it," said graduate student Cac Nguyen, the lead author of the paper. "We measure the reflection, and with the reference light we can get the structure in depth."

The single scan is performed in a fraction of a second speed is a necessity for treating squirming tots and images a few millimeters deep behind the eardrum. Thus, doctors can see not only the presence of a biofilm, but also how thick it is and its position against the eardrum.

The paper marks the first demonstration of using the ear OCT device to detect biofilms in human patients. To test their device, the researchers worked with clinicians at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., to scan patients with diagnosed chronic ear infections, as well as patients with normal ears. The device identified biofilms in all patients with chronic infections, while none of the normal ears showed evidence of biofilms.

"I think this is now a technology that allows physicians to monitor chronic ear infection, and examine better ways to treat the disease," said Boppart, who is also affiliated with the departments of bioengineering and internal medicine, the Institute for Genomic Biology, and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I. "We can use different antibiotics and see how the biofilm responds."

Next, the researchers plan to investigate different ear pathology, particularly comparing acute and chronic infections, and will examine the relationship between biofilms and hearing loss. They hope that improved diagnostics will lead to better treatment and referral practices.

The researchers hope to make their device currently a hand-held prototype even more compact, easy to use, and low-cost. The device company Welch Allyn, based in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., is a collaborator on the project, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Boppart's group and its collaborators also will work to apply OCT imaging to other areas commonly examined by primary-care physicians. The ear-imaging device is the first in a suite of OCT-based imaging tools that the group plans to develop. Doctors could change the tip of the new OCT device, for example, to look at the eyes, mouth, nose, or skin.

"All the sites that a primary-care physician would look at, we can now look at with this more advanced imaging, " Boppart said. "With OCT, we are bringing to the primary-care clinic high-resolution 3-D digital imaging and being able to look at many different tissue structures in real-time, non-invasively and in depth."

"As medicine gets more high-tech, we want to give the front-line doctor the best technology to detect disease early," Boppart said.

Some Important Uses of Sports Nutrition Supplements for Teenagers

Before looking into buying sports or protein supplements for your teenager, you need to find out if you kid really needs them ? if so, how they should be taken and how they will help your child. Also, it would be a good idea to consult a sports nutritionist. Take along a chart listing your teenager?s weekly diet.

Protein Supplements

Protein is essential for building human tissue. The protein supplements in your diet should be about 30 percent of your daily calorific intake. Teenagers have just left behind their childhood and are going through the chrysalis before stepping over the threshold into adulthood. A lot of activity is taking place within their bodies. Don?t let them fall prey to peer pressure and take sports supplements without proper guidance. While sports nutrition in the right quantities may be essential, it could have detrimental long term effects if taken in excess.

While the right amount of protein is essential especially if your child is an aspiring athlete, excessive protein affects ketosis and upsets the macronutrient balance.

Why the Body Needs Protein

Proteins along with carbohydrates and fat provide the calories required for everyday activities. Without protein, repair and maintenance of body tissue is not possible. Each gram of protein consumed provides the body 4 calories. With both parents working outside the home these days, it is doubtful if your teenager is getting the required protein. Sport supplement with proper guidance is a solution worth considering. Any excessive intake of protein gets converted to fat cells. In the absence of calories the body taps into the protein reserves for energy ? and the job of protein is body building, not giving energy. In the absence of a well planned and balanced diet, whey protein supplements from a reputed company provide your teenager with adequate calories.

Calculating How Much Protein Your Teenager Needs

How much protein your teenager needs depends on your teenager?s body size. A growing teenager?s body certainly needs more protein per pound than an adult?s body. The body requires 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram. First convert your teenager?s body weight to Kilograms.

1. Wt in Kg = wt in pounds/2.2
2. Multiply the result with 0.8 grams.

While too much protein from sports supplements is not beneficial and minimum result in muscle issue loss. Check the label of any supplements you buy. Make you teenager understand the importance of a balanced diet.

(AP) ? Qatar's Interior Ministry said 13 children were among 19 people killed in a fire that broke out in one of the country's fanciest shopping malls late Monday morning, raising questions about building safety in the booming Gulf state.

At least some of the victims died as rescuers struggled to reach a child care center at the Villaggio mall in the capital Doha, according to Qatar's Minister of State for Interior Affairs, Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.

Four of the children killed were Spanish citizens living in the small Arab emirate, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said. It did not identify the children, citing Spanish privacy regulations.

Also, a 3-year-old French child was among the victims, the deputy minister for overseas French citizens, Yamina Benguigui, said in a statement.

Young New Zealand triplets were also believed to be among the victims, said New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key, though he could not yet confirm the deaths.

"We tried our best, but when we got there, the children were trapped inside. We are very sorry for what happened. We tried as much as we could to save these people," Sheik Abdullah told reporters in Doha.

Four teachers and two civil defense officials were among the dead, the Qatari ministry said on its official Twitter page.

Another 17 people were injured, including four children, according to authorities. Most of those hurt were rescuers responding to the blaze.

Witnesses earlier reported thick black smoke pouring from the ritzy mall around midday. Amateur photos and videos posted online showed firefighters rescuing victims by climbing on the roof.

The Interior Ministry said the fire was extinguished hours later.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thick smoke and heat hindered rescue efforts, as did a lack of floor plans and malfunctioning sprinkler systems, the ministry said on Twitter.

Sheik Abdullah said all buildings in the country abide by safety requirements, but a special committee will nonetheless be set up to monitor building safety standards.

The Villaggio opened in 2006 and is one of Qatar's most popular shopping and amusement destinations. Retailers include many well-known Western brands, such as Foot Locker, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and British department store Marks & Spencer, according to the mall's website.

Malls throughout the oil-rich Arab Gulf are popular with families looking for entertainment destinations that provide relief from soaring summer temperatures. The Villaggio includes an ice skating rink, theme park, movie theater and indoor Venice-style gondola rides.

New construction projects such as the Villaggio have transformed the face of once-sleepy Doha in recent years, as the country benefits from a hydrocarbon boom. The OPEC member state is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

Qatar won the right to host soccer's 2022 World Cup a year and a half ago.

Kim Kardashian Lets Loose at Beyonce Concert

After a whirlwind trip to Cannes, France last week and losing sentimental items and trust to TSA on her trip home, Kim Kardashian was looking to let loose.

So she did. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star made a beeline for Beyonce's concert at Revel's Ovation Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sunday night.

In addition to dancing and singing along to Bey's chart-topping hits, Kim got a chance to chat with the woman of the evening herself backstage. OMG!

Casual BeyonceKim in Kannes

The two have plenty to discuss, of course. Beyonce's husband of four years, Jay-Z, is best friends with Kanye West, Kardashian's serious boyfriend.

Says a source klose to Kim:

"Kim thought it was such a great show. There's always some random rumors there is tension between them and there totally isn't! Kim had so much fun."

B's concert weekend, her first since becoming a mom, drew many big names. Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama were among other notable attendees.

During Saturday's performance (she did four shows there), Beyonce revealed that she's lost 60 pounds since giving birth to baby Blue Ivy Carter.

"Y'all have no idea how hard I worked! They had me on that treadmill. I ate lettuce!" she told her fans. "Now tonight I'm gonna get chocolate wasted!"

That's probably what Kim says about ... chocolate also.

If there is any issue that threatens to derail relations with Russia, it's the issue of missile defense.?

If there is any issue that threatens to derail the fragile East-West d?tente that's held since President Obama set out to reverse the mini-cold war that prevailed under George W. Bush, it's the increasingly acrimonious dispute over missile defense.

Earlier this month Russia's top general, Nikolai Makarov, went so far as to suggest that his forces might launch a preemptive strike against NATO missile defense emplacements in Central Europe?if they were perceived to threaten Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent.

But NATO, which has made the issue a litmus test of alliance unity, has remained unmoved by Russian bombast on the subject and is clearly moving forward with the project, which is planned to reach full operational capability by 2020.

"This is the first step towards our long-term goal of providing full coverage and protection for all NATO European populations, territory, and forces. Our system will link together missile defense assets from different Allies ? satellites, ships, radars, and interceptors ? under NATO command and control," NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the summit on Sunday. "It will allow us to defend against threats from outside the Euro-Atlantic area," he added.

Buried deep inside NATO's Chicago Summit Declaration is the strongest political statement yet offered by the alliance in hopes of mollifying Russian worries: "NATO missile defense is not directed against Russia and will not undermine Russia?s strategic deterrence capabilities," it says. "While regretting recurrent Russian statements on possible measures directed against NATO?s missile defense system, we welcome Russia's willingness to continue dialogue with the purpose of finding an agreement on the future framework for missile defense cooperation."

While that statement may be perceived in Moscow as progress, it falls far short of the legally binding written pledge that the Kremlin has demanded.

"We've heard this before," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow-based foreign-policy journal. "The thing is, when the?Americans say their missile defense plans are not directed against Russia, they're telling the truth. It's against everybody. Since Ronald Reagan first floated the idea, missile defense has been seen as a way to protect the US against any and every possible missile threat. But Russia is the main country whose national security is based on strategic nuclear deterrence, in a balance with US forces. It cannot help but concern us directly."?
